Went and got the Bronco fixed today at Jim Matson automtive (great, honest mechanic btw) on Pico and Crenshaw and across the street was Capitol Burger. Decided to give it a shot and it was well worth it. There is only one guy, who looks about 78 working there. He takes your order and about 10 minutes to cook it himself. Good burgers, fresh lettuce and tomato and toasted buns. Also provides real handmade milkshakes with ice cream, milk and they're goood.

He then comes over, adds up your items on a piece of paper, adds them all by hand (carrying the 1 and totalling up the columns) and your tray is the box bottom from an old case of soda pop or Steel Reserve. Absolutely delicious. Then on the way home I found a new (?) radio station 93.5 that played Mary J and then O.P.P. I then came home and put on Feel Me Flow - Naughty by Nature and found myself agreeing with Treach that pop needed another anthem. Here's to hoping they come out with a brilliant song like Feel Me Flow for Summer 2010. I dare you to avoid getting a smile on your face while you're listening to this and thinking about going out on a nice sunny day.

Somebody brought up the Eurythmics the other day and I forgot how much I liked them and how great they were. I bought a bootlegged VHS tape of their greatest hits videos a LONG time ago. It was at some CD store and the kid working had taped it off a Japanese import laserdisc he had. I had to pay $20 for it ( alot of $ for me back then) but I couldn't figure out any other way to get it so... Anyway, totally worth it.

Pause the song over on the right hand side, and watch the video if you want. Sort of silly and over the top video, but it's sort of charming too and Annie Lenox just makes things work.

The Great Michael Jackson

I know it's been a few months but it still feels like the world is missing him. Couple things:

1 - The song playing right now on this page is a Jackson 5 song that I never really heard much but is one of my favorite songs in the world right now. Little Michael belting out that chorus is GORGEOUS. Not sure why this song isn't more well known. Anyway, it's good stuff.

2 - I'm going to see THIS IS IT. I don't expect it to be a masterpiece or anything, but I'm guessing that there's at least a few 'wow. this guy was an amazing genius freak' moments in it.

Google Reader

For those of you who read this and don't use Google Reader, you should. It's brilliant and if you are a heavy blog reader, saves you hours each week and reminds you to check blogs that you may sometimes forget about (like mine)

If you have a gmail account you just click on Reader at the top of the page. If you don't have one, you can still sign up for it. It allows you to add any page that gets updated and then you just login to your reader, can read every single one of your blogs that you are following and then be on your way. Anytime there's a new posting, it shows up. It's brilliant.

In other news, umm went to Down n Derby last night at the Echoplex. Tons o fun. roller skating in a nightclub with great tunes and cool people.
Going to AZ next week for a few days.
Getting a new roommate.

Here is an interesting quote from Brian Eno. Great musician from the 70's and collaborator with David Byrne and U2. He has also created some app for the iPhone that is supposed to be pretty cool. Anyway the quote is below. It's from a year of his diary published about 10 yrs ago. But it's out of print and costs over $100 to buy it now. He is also coming to CSU Long Beach in a few months and would love to go , but THAT costs $100 to see him speak. Man, just cause he's smart does he have to be expensive too?

One suggestion is that the whole basis of human specialness is our ability to cooperate — and to cooperate you have to be able to imagine what it would be like to hold another picture of the world. You’re unable to cooperate unless you can be mentally in at least two worlds at once — your own and that of the person with whom you’re working. The failure to grasp other pictures of the world is what we call autism, and in its extreme from is something we regard as a sever dysfunction. Well, all animals are by our standards relatively autistic — unable to see into each other’s minds, lacking empathy.

So how do we develop this ability to experience and speculate about other ways of thinking and feeling about the world? I think we do it by continually immersing ourselves in cultural experiences that rehearse us. This is obvious in films and novels — where we quite explicitly enter an imagined world and then watch imaginary quandaries. In doing so we develop a lot of surrogate experience about what it is like to be someone else, somewhere else, with different assumptions.

Something cool to think about when creating or viewing any type of artistic project, be it music, movies, paintings, books etc. Hopefully most art can be entertainment AND something to take you outside of your life for awhile.

Also, put a new song over on the right hand side. It mentions Michael Jackson and Joe Jackson in it so maybe that's why I thought of it again. (lots of death in the celebsphere these days, right? farrah, mcmahon, MJ etc. You think there really are more deaths or have we just created more celebrities and therefore have more of them to pass away?

Anyway, saw Keri Hilson perform this on David Letterman and it was great.

It's worth watching. Dave was overwhelmed with Keri and the performance and I totally agree. Everyone has their favorites; some it's Conan, some it's Kimmel, some (no idea why, but) it's Leno, but for me Dave is by far the classiest and most interesting talk show host. He seems really honest and has REALLY good taste. Love that he's a pretty old dude and still blown away by a young hot musician like Keri.

Anyway, this performance and song really work for me. I think I might be crushing a bit.

Saw the movie UP last night. Had no real idea what it was about and wasn't THAT excited to see it initially, but was blown away. Pixar is a fascinating company in that they seem incapable of producing a crappy movie.

The animation is gorgeous, the story is always good, it always makes me laugh out loud a few times, even the music is amazing. Ended up being very pleasantly surprised. I think the only other animated films that come close for me are Miyazaki and they are much different. Anyway, if you haven't, go see Up.

Decided last minute to go to Coachella yesterday. Here is a summary of what happened.

First, we got there and the parking was actually very close. Easy to get to, parking lot watered down to avoid dust and friendly people working the lines. They also passed out free earplugs, had lots of food options and water was only $2/bottle.
First we saw a few songs by Friendly Fires. They sounded pretty tight, had good energy and were fun. Then hit the DJ tent and danced a little to Shepard Fairey (decent) and Busy P (better)

Then went over and saw Brian Jonestown Massacre. VERY solid. I'd never seen them live and was impressed. Great, bluesy early Rolling Stones type stuff. I was neither here nor there on them before, but seeing them live won me over. No meltdowns, tight songs, fun crowd.

Next up was YeahYeahYeahs. They were amazing. Karen O is a FULL ON ROCK STAR. Came out with gold dress and gold sparkly stuff with some turquoise tights and her signature bangs. They played a lot off this recent album (which could be the best album of the year. Seriously. It's Blitz) and were the band playing as the sun went down. It's so dramatic being out there in the heat and then having the sun slowly set behind the palm trees and the temperature dropping about 15 degrees almost instantly. Very physical experience. So yeah, they were GREAT.

Then came My Bloody Valentine. I loved it. They played tons of stuff off of Loveless, which was one of the defining albums of the early 90's. Lots of swirling guitars, softly mixed vocals and loud, tremolo guitar. The last song contained a 15 minute feedback section. It was literally the same chord played over and over with a constant, insane drumbeat the whole time. One of the loudest things I have ever heard in my life. It was literally just a giant wall of noise. A lot of people hated it (and they have a right to, it was literally punishing to the audience), but I was fascinated. It went past the point of interesting and it became communal with everyone looking around at each other trying to figure out what was going on. You couldn't talk cause you couldn't hear ANYTHING over the sound, but you all were going through the same thing. It finally ended and they went off stage. Pretty fascinating.

Then the closers... THE CURE!
First time I had seen them live and they were awesome. Robert Smith looked and sounded great. It was a simple 4 piece setup with 2 guitars, drum and bass. No keyboards, few sequencers, no frills. Just straight ahead rock n roll sort of. Different than I expected, but really lean and tight.
Lots of deep tracks from all kinds of albums. Disintegration, Kiss Me..., Pornography, etc etc.
Then they came back for their encore and Robert said that they were going to play until we went home. Then they played a couple encores with old stuff like The Kiss, Forest, etc. and then after Fire in Cairo, they cut the main PA system and all the video monitors. Luckily we were only about 4 rows back and the band kept playing just through their amps. So could still hear Simon's drums and bass and guitars. They were playing Boys Don't Cry so the crowd just filled in all the lyrics for Robert. Then they started into Jumping Someone Else's Train. They literally were not going to stop until we went home!
After that, they had to turn their amps off. I can understand Coachella wanting to wrap it up, but way to go Cure for playing until the last absolute minute. They tried to get us to sing along to another one without any vocals or amps, but nobody could hear anything at all, so they finally had to leave the stage. Freakin' Rock n Roll thing to do. They looked good, played really tight, grabbed from all over their catalog and played until "the man" said they couldnt play anymore and then STILL played some more.

Overall, a well run festival, great bands and I will go back next year for sure. Wow.

Should I just realize what I am and be happy with a monthly blog post? Maybe.
Anyway, here is some random stuff that happened in March and April:

The picture above is an art show we went to on Melrose. Ruel designed a toy for it. But a really cool toy and a really cool opening. We had fun. I bought a little zipper pull when I was there.

My nephew named him "Strawley" Pretty good name I have to admit. Also went to Disneyland, AZ twice, bought a new Guitar Amp, New camera, did some cool photo shoots and worked a lot.

Also, there is some great music out there right now. The song playing at the moment is ZERO by Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Their whole album, It's Blitz, is great. Also, Doves came out with a new album called Kingdom of Rust. It's another brilliant album from beginning to end. Lots of good music in the world still.

Just got back from a busy weekend in Arizona.
Hit a spring training game in PHX on Thur, went to Alice Cooperstown for a pulled pork sandwich and then rode the new light rail over to my sister's house in Tempe. It worked quite well and was a clean, quick trip. Not a ton of riders, but hopefully it picks up. Nice to see PHX with a halfway decent public transportation system.

Then on Friday, had a mtg with Rachel to plan out a shoot sometime soon. Seems cool and like she'll be a good model. I think we'll do some good stuff soon. Had a Coyote screening on Fri night. good crowd, good response and some cast members there as well. Went out Fri night. Me, Brett, Brian and Laura and Jenna. Hanging out with laura after all these years. Who knew?
Saturday had Derin and Keeley's reception. Good food, good times and a good couple. Then off to another screening of the movie at The Screening Room. Saw more good friends there from years ago and then hit Desert Diamond where I was exhausted, but made some good spending money for the trip. Winning money is fun.

Sunday we hit another Spring Training game in Scottsdale and made our way back to L.A. I think other people have photos that I'll post eventually, but for now you'll have to imagine it in your mind.

Here is a link to a new UK girl called LaRoux. It's a very 80's feel to it and there is something fascinating about this girl. I think she may make it pretty big. Cool song with sort of a cheesy yet brilliant video, but worth watching.

Detroit and Beeps

So I got back from Detroit almost 2 weeks ago and it's a brilliant city. Granted there are tons of burnt out, abandoned houses and I'm sure there are really dangerous parts of town, but there is a blue collar ethic about it that I really like. Met tons of cool people, some cool architecture, it's close to Canada, GREAT radio stations and there are SOOOO many great music acts who were/are based in Detroit.

QUick update to tell you that I have been watching American Idol proudly and loving it. Great television. Although Emily, the girl who I thought might win it all got booted before the final 36. She was the bleached blond tatted rocker chick who sang Barracuda. One of my favorite songs of all time and she nailed it.

But when she got to Hollywood, she panicked at the last second and sang some lame No Doubt song (not that NoDoubt is lame, but it doesn't really show off your vocal skills) and then forgot the words the next day and didnt sound all that hot. Sad, but she's gone. A few other favorites disappeared as well. It's too tough to keep track of them until they hit the final group. So when it gets down to the final 36 I'll prob post a lit of my favorites and of the people that I HATE. Oh, I know some people don't like him, but that Norman Gentle guy is a freak and I am diggin that character he's got going on. Fascinating. Oh, and why doesn't Ryan do "Seacrest... Out" anymore?

Here is a picture of Juliette Commagere. We saw her play at the Troubadour about 3 weeks ago. I have been following her music for about 3 years now and she is amazing. gorgeous girl, amazing voice and her new songs are big, epic, cinematic numbers. I've had a prety big crush on her since I first heard her voice. But she's dating her brilliant drummer from Hello Stranger days.

The show was great and I highly recommend checking out her Myspace page. The song playing right now is just HUGE and almost brings tears to your eyes if you're in the right state of mind.

And speaking of playing, our band is playing another show this Friday at the Cat Club. We've got a new/old song that is added to the set. Its actually an old toughskins song from the college days and we've just changed it around, updated it and made it even harder than before. Should be a really fun show. OK. This is the moment that I seriously step up my blog writing, both quality and quantity. The reason being that I am going to post one of the BEST television news interviews EVER. I know that sounds excessive and exaggerated, but it is totally true. I happened to see it on the news one day while fixing some fresh salad and pasta and started laughing out loud. Some woman was found dead in her home after a long time. Apparently her son knew about it and met cops there knowing the dead body was in the back of the house rotting. There were cats and garbage everywhere. Pretty crazy story. As soon as I saw it I had to record it on our DVR.

The thing is, when you watch it the second time, it's even funnier, I promise. You'll want to pause the song in the player on the right so you can hear it. Go ahead.... I'll wait. OK. Now hit PLAY

Most people say they never saw it coming whenever there is a murder or death in their neighborhood, but not Henry Foster. It didn't surprise him...

Here is a picture of the latest Cerasoli/LeBasse gallery opening.
Cool group show of about a dozen different artists and then a solo room by an artist named Evan Harris. Good stuff, but nothing that really clicked hardcore with me. The space is great though and Evan Cerasoli was DJing strictly 80's tunes. A little Cult, Eddy Grant, Depeche Mode etc etc.

Whenever I hit art openings I feel the need to make more money to buy more cool original art. Taryn went with me and really liked it. She almost walked out with a couple of paintings I think, but will find something there at another show soon I'm sure.

Also, for some reason the current song popped into my head and had to add it for anyone that checks in here every once in awhile. I've always loved this song for some reason. Pretty silly, but those nice warm chords and that heavy Miami Bass beat with some nice vocals are a pretty deadly mix. Ghost Town DJ's BROUGHT IT HARD on this one.

OK. can't figure out to make the heater work so my feet are freezing and its time to hop under the down comforter.

Here is another couple pictures. one from chicago in front of the city offices and the big Christmas tree and the other backstage at the Mint from a show we played the other night. Chicago was cold and snowy. I think it's a cool city but I've never spent THAT much time there. It's sort of like New York except not nearly as exciting and also a little more 'real'. So it's good and bad. Not as much constant stimulation but also not as much constant stimulation.

The show was also good and bad. It was good cause we had a blast and are more relaxed and having more fun than we have. Each show gets more fun and we sound a little tighter. But we also played in front of maybe a couple dozen people and went on at about 12:45 on a Tuesday night. Pretty empty and quiet but fun stuff. In the spirit of music and life on stage etc. I changed the song today to Feel Flows. It is used a couple times in ALMOST FAMOUS and is a really cool song in most parts. That movie is definitely a top 10 for me. Cameron Crowe is a brilliant director and that movie is his own story, which always makes for a good movie. There are parts that almost bring tears to your eyes, not because they are so earth moving or incredible but just so well done and realistic and .... just real. If you haven't seen it, go check it out. If you have, see it again. I could watch it almost every night and love it more every time.

Ok. Posting from my blackberry on here for the first time. Here is a picture of the socks discussed below.
I'm in the chicago airport and sitting next to some guy that literally makes me ill. He is about 40 and reall swarthy looking. He has on some hip shoes with orange stitching and some socks with little birds on them. He's got his powerbook and his iphone and his blackberry all out on his lap and is going through his facebook pictures.
Oh, he is also on his way to miami and smells strongly of alcohol and gauthier cologne. A really sweet sickly smell just a small step above vomit. And of course he was the last one to get on the plane. Just sitting there with everyone else boarding. DOUCHEBAG. I should have found his profile on facebook to post how douche-y the guy was.
The thing is, I worry that I'm going to end up like him or maybe already am. He's obviously single and considers himself a 'cool' guy and party boy. I mean, I would never wear those idiotic socks or smell so raunchy but other than that.. Anyway, I really don't think I am as trashy and I sure hope people don't see me that way. I need to go throw up.

OK. The Pony has gone it's first ride and it was a good one. The Cat Club is on the Sunset Strip. Slim Jim Phantom owns the place. He was the drummer for the Stray Cats and has a small club there. GREAT place for our first show. The crowd was great, the songs were tight and we had a total blast. We opened for a band that had guys from Guns n Roses, Jellyfish, Joey Ramone band, Billy Idol's band. They are all BRILLIANT musicians and their set right after ours was a lot of fun. A cover or Don't Stop Believin' that was mind blowing.

We've still got a long way to go to get to the point they were at, but we had a quick 25 minute set that was more fun than we thought. It's amazing how fast stuff goes. You get up there and sort of forget what notes, songs, lyrics etc you're even playing. You just let your mind sort of get to it and time flies by.
We're playing again at The Good Hurt Dec 11th and if anybody is here in L.A. let me know and we'll get you on the list to check it out. We've got even another song that's in the works so if you came last time, come again. If you missed it the first time, make sure you come this time. We just got fiOS internet from verizon which is supposed to be really speedy, but it's CRAWLING along today so I'm not going to upload any photos on this posting. I have yet to find an internet service that is worth what they charge for it. Anyway...

-Pony pictures coming soon from last performance. We're playing again Dec 11th at Good Hurt so if you're around west LA area, plan on checking it out.

-The fires are mostly out. It was REALLY smoky and ashy for a couple days there. All the cars are dirty, lots of coughing and hazy skies and smelly air. Lots of big homes burned to the ground. Happens every year. I guess L.A.'s way of keeping population down?

-Saw Slumdog Millionaire the other night. Brilliant movie. It's in very limited release but will go wider I'm sure and will be at a theater near you sometime soon. It's another Danny Boyle masterpiece with lots of action, some great touching moments and a cool story. There's a funny moment at the end where both Sarah and I thought something different was going to happen and we were both wrong. If you see it, let me know if the same thing happened for you.

And I didn't post pics from the Tour deFat, the event that convinced me to start riding my bike a lot (which I have), but sometime soon it will happen

In the meantime here is a pic from the Ft Lauderdale Film Festival. This was a Sunday morning brunch cruise. John Ratzenberger accomodated us with a group photo. Nice guy and very funny in real life, not just as Cliff. He was complimnetary about Coyote too, which was cool. After an interesting cruise and other stuff that sort of drove us crazy, everyone left except me. I then went down to Miami to chill in South Beach for a couple days. Weather was great, got to hang with some friends there and get a little color before Fall/Winter show up (assuming they ever make it this year). I guess that's it for now.

Yeah, yeah. I know. It;s been awhile, but you know.... Olympics and stuff.
So here's another grab bag:

-new song is from Viva La Vida. Everybody has heard the singles and this isn't one yet I don't think, so I posted it. It's really mainstream and everybody knows about it, I recommend picking it up. Those guys write great songs. Last time I was in Denver I had XM radio in my rental car and it had a station alled '30 days of coldplay' that played nothing but. And I'm not a HUGE fan, but with the hundreds of stations on XM it was actually one that I listened to the most probably.

-Just got back from Vegas. We had the Fantasy Football Draft. Pretty nerdy thing, but it's definitely a male bonding event that has been a tradition now for close to a decade. Pretty fun group of guys and fun event. There's always talk of how the league is dying and questions of how long it will go on. And I think it may go on for awhile. Here's a couple pics:

Back to my MBA days, I am posting a bullet point entry today.

- Just got back from Denver. It gets HOT there in the summer. Nice place though. I might even visit again sometime soon.

-The Dark Knight (as everyone in the world already knows) was spectacular. Well written, hit on some pretty heavy themes that apply to today's world, great acting and amazing direction. If Nolan doesn't get nominated for Best Director for the Oscars, I will be very very surprised.

-The Weepies are a great little band. Music that makes me nostalgic for something, although I'm not sure what. beautiful songs, a GORGEOUS voice and a really cool feel. Mike Warner entered a contest to make the video for their latest single and won. It's a great song and really cute video. I'm not big on posting video clip links, but this is worth 3 minutes of your day.

OK, first of all, this wonderful music you are listening to is Amiina. A 4 piece band of talented women from Iceland. Iceland is in my top 2 places I want to visit right now. Seems like it is full of artistic, beautiful, nice people, music and art. More on Iceland later. For now, enjoy this cool song.

Second of all, I'll give everyone (like there are a ton of you reading this) a quick rundown of the Italy trip, since there are stories and rumors out there the truth needs to come out.

Coyote played at the Ecovision Film Festival in Palermo. This is on the island of Sicily. Old school Italy, far from the touristy areas of Rome etc. It's the little island at the bottom of the boot. That weekend was Brian Petersen's wedding (CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN AND KRIS. AWESOME that you guys are married! Was hoping for it the whole time!) and he called me the day before and asked if I would go represent Coyote. I told him as long as I had Kris' permission to miss the wedding too, I would go.
So on Sat I went to the airport at 5 am and checked in plenty early. While I was waiting, I fell asleep in the terminal and when I awoke, my flight had left without me. I missed it by about 15 minutes somehow. I then had to try and get the next flight to Chicago. I was 7th on the standby list and was literally sweating bullets. I begged her to let me on and I think she saw hoe desperate I was cause there was some guy who checked in late and they told him that he couldnt get on the flight. Then she called me over after he left and gave me my ticket. WHEW.
Then I got to Chicago and there was a rainstorm, (by the way this was the VERY FIRST FLIGHT from Chicago to Milan for AIR ONE) and they moved the flight to Indianapolis. The weather cleared up and it came back to Chicago 5 HOURS LATER. meaning I would miss my connection in Milan no matter what. Oh, by the way, I was carrying the film in my hands and it wouldn't show if I didn't make it in time.
I called Chris and Brett at the wedding and asked for some info on the Italian travel guy. Chris was helpful and said he would tell him about my troubles and get something solved. So I hopped on and slept for an hour or two on the flight over. I got to Milan and there were 3 flights in all of Milan that made it to Palermo on time. I was literally running top speed around the airport trying to get back and forth between places. Nobody was willing to help and it was REALLY humid. So finally, Luigi (yes, Mario's brother) books me a flight on Easyjet since it is the absolute last flight that will get me there on time. Picks me up at the airport and we FLY in the cab to the botanical garden where the movie is screening. People are already in seats and the movie is to start in 15 minutes NO LIES!!!! They put the big digibeta tape in, Gloria, (former Miss Italy who was quite cute and did a good job) announces COYOTE! and the place goes black.... nothing. no images. I am freaking and go back and there are two Sicilian dudes arguing and trying to figure out what's wrong. I hand them the backup DVD and luckily after about 5 minutes it works.

The movie starts and nobody understands any of it. There are a few good little jokes at the beginning that geta little laughter, but nothing. silence. NO LAUGHING AT ALL. I literally am sick to my stomach thinking "I Went through hell for this??" I go to eat dinner (lots of fish and octopus) and still feel pretty sick, but when I come back, the vibe is different and people are kind of liking it. They're into the action and the images and the feel. Movie ends and eveybody claps and smiles and really likes it.
Relieved I go back to hotel and sleep. Wake up next day, buy underwear, toohtpaste, toothbrush, clean shirt, ride the shuttle etc. (luggage never made it to Italy so smelled REALLY bad, even for Europeans I think) Nobody in the town really speaks English. Interesting challenge. That night, go to the award ceremony, see some good clips of other films and then the big award comes up for best film of the festival and it is Coyote! Very cool.

Had to go up and have a translator for my comments, but people really liked it. Turns out they pretty much missed all the humor and satire, but loved the locations and the desert and the action and the beauty. Many comments of how beautiful and spiritual it was. Kind of cool to see the reaction like that in the home of Coppola, Scorcese, Fellini etc. They really like beautiful, serious films so the comments were great and the Coyote team should be very proud.

Went to airport about 5 hours after the awards ceremony, made it to airport fine, flew business class from Milan to Chicago since they screwed up so bad and it was pretty nice, that business class. and then back to LA. OK. First off, I have to talk about a banner ad I just saw on my projectplaylist site. It is one of those animated ones where they trick you into clicking on it, by having a button you're supposed to push. It has a big animated gorilla and then a little human (you) running towards a helicopter. The words are such a strange mix of demands and emotions that it really takes a toll. It says:

OUTRUN THE GORILLA!
FIND UR CRUSH'S NAME!

So if you DON'T outrun the gorilla you are going to die. If you DO outrun the gorilla you get the reward of finding out a secret that possible leads to true love. Pretty drastic. Either a great thing or a terrible thing, so you're already pretty confused. Then if you do nothing, you just watch the gorilla catch you and it says " LOSER! try again" I hate being called a loser, but I rose above and still didn't click on it, because I'm strong in mind.

ANYWAY. The song playing now and the album cover above are from M83. This song and album are brand new, but capture the 80's sound better than most '80's' bands. Kim and Jessie sounds like it is straight from a John Hughes movie and that album cover makes my heart hurt because it is so dead on, such a great composed photo and because it makes me wish I was 12 years old watching a VHS of Breakfast Club or something. Anyway, it's a brilliant CD if you are into 80's music and I highly recommend picking it up.

Last night was the first of 2 screenings for Coyote at LA Film Festival. Audience was totally full and we actually had to turn people away. I was handling some tickets duties so got into the film a bit late and had to sit in the front row. I got a little sick a few times (not actually puking or anything, but sic to stomach and headache) but that being said it was a great screening. Great audience response, some good interest for future projects, fun Q&A etc etc. Rich Raddon, who runs the festival did the intro. It's a very well run festival with big crowds at every screening and he has done a great job.

We have another screening on Wed 4:30 PM at Regent Wilshire in Westwood. We saw HottieBoombaLottie there the other day and it was a nice little movie too. I'm sure it will be somewhere for you to view soon. Worth checking out.

This is just some random picture from backstage at mofashionshow. I am working with a lot of filters and overlays recently. Not thrilled with my progress, but I'm starting to figure things out bit by bit. I see photographers whose style I like but they are always hesitant to help. Maybe it's good, so that I create my own rather than try to copy anyone. Will have more interesting stuff soon. Supposed to have a few shoots lined up in the next week or two. Need to figure out a location etc. They shoudl be fun stuff though.

I put up a new (old) song today. Probably not for everyone, but I heard it a few years back and it fascinated me. It's a Whitney Houston song v. With or Without You by U2. This version has some other girl doing vocals. I have a copy of the original vocals by Whitney and it sounds like the songs were actually written for each other. REALLY good mashups fascinate me. This is one of them. If you really like it I can email you the REAL Whitney version, but it's long and highly illegal. And Whitney would probly get angry at me and never do coke with me again.

A couple entries in a week. When I go back and read this in 10 years I'll be impressed with how dilligent I was.
I was going to turn this blog into a "cool things" blog and not talk about myself anymore, but it didn't work. Here are some "cool things":
-Saw a movie called Reprise the other night. It was from Norway. Very good. About 2 guys who are writers and submit their manuscripts at same time. One ends up being successful and cracking up, the other not as successful and still struggles with writing what he REALLY wants to write. I saw some other move when we went to the Bahamas Film Fest from Norway. I cant remember what it's called, but it was good. I like Norwegian film apparently. Norwegian music too. I should go there soon.
-Halcyon and On - A 9 minute song by Orbital that you're prob listening to right now. it;s really old, but very relaxing for me. Not much else to say. Either you love it or maybe you don't.
-I posted a few photos finally. Been editing a bit. Need to start shooting more.
-Discovered a new restuarant here in West LA. Bourbon Street Grill. Pepper burgers, blackened fish, hush puppies. Cajun.

OK, There's a band from my old neighborhood in Los Feliz/Silverlake (I know, what band ISN'T from there these days...) apparently called THE LITTLE ONES. They have this song that is a bit catchy. Not for everyone, but it's pretty fun if you let yourself enjoy it (prob playing right now if your'e reading this)
They also have another song that I can't seem to find except on their MySpace page. HERE
Scroll down and it's titled OrdSongElectrelane Sort of atmospheric and soothing and I listened to it over and over. Does that all make sense?????

Also, BRITISH KNIGHTS. My favorite shoes that I have ever owned probably when I was a little kid. BK's are back, but no plans to make this shoe again. If they do, I am running out to buy a pair or two INSTANTLY.

Just got back from AZ Film Festival where we had a little screening of COYOTE. It went well, lots of people who've been curious about it got to see it, we had some fun times etc etc. Would definitely like to head back there and shoot more stuff soon. I think there might be photos of it that I can post, but right now am busy working on another short to shoot this weekend so here's a quick one of Brett and I in the Crossroads theater.

First of all, go to the player on the right on play the first song. It's the current AMAZING thing that I am posting about. 8:08 pm at the Beach. It's mellow and appropriate for anyone. You may not dig it, but it's the sort of song, that just makes everything seem OK while you're listening to it. The title describes the feeling of it. This Fred Falke guy does some pretty cool stuff if you like this.

The picture on the left is from fashion week last week. Took a bunch of photos and have not gotten around to editing them. This is just a random placeholder. I'll have a better link to a whole album of them soon enough. Really. I will.

So yeah, fashion week was fun overall, but I got tired of it quickly. Lots of hassle and hype for a quick 10 minute show. But I did meet some interesting and attractive people. Maybe more on that in future posts.

Last night went to Troubadour with the great Cindy Clark and her sistam to see Portugal The Man. Had never seen them and they were quite good. The opening band, Sexy Shazam was pretty insane. They had a stage show that was ummm... difficult to describe but a joy to watch.

Last night saw Explosions in the Sky at the Wiltern here in Los Angeles. Was a great show. Very intense band and totally unique. They remind me more of going to the symphony than a typical rock show.
Peter Berg was there with some people and Minka Kelly as well. Was appropriate that some Friday Night Lights people were there to support/enjoy them. I think playing that music would be really cathartic and good for you. Well, except for the part of when your shredding your fingers on the guitar string, but other than that.... Great show. I put a song on the player that you can listen to if you are unfamiliar with Explosions in the Sky.

OK. Something Spectacular. Actually, it's from an album called Oracular Spectacular from the band MGMT. The song is the first one on the playlist to the right. It's a bit of an autobiographical song, a bit of a fantasy, some cynicism and optimism and a really dirty, cool bass line. CanNOT get enough of it lately .The thing is, it's much better if you turn it up really quite loud with lots of loud bass. Also, it does say the 'F' word in it, so it may not be for everyone.

OK. Time for another plug of something awesome. This may not be for everyone and at times it is overly dramatic, but I have been fascinated with this show. The format is really cool. It is on HBO 5 nights a week with just a half hour episode. Each episode covers a half hour treatment session. Everything is real time and usually only has 2 or 3 at the most actors. Paul (played by Gabriel Byrne) is a therapist who works out of an office in his home. Monday night episodes are with Laura every week, Tue is with Alex, Wed is with Sophie, Thur is Jake and Amy and then on Fri Paul the therapist goes to another therapist cause his life is sort of in shambles too.
I've never seen a drama that's on 5 nights a week and the show itself is really good. It's definitely some 'intellectual' writer-y type stuff and the actors are all great. Would be a great opportunity for actors with such meaty material and playing opposite other great actors.

If you're behind, you can download the podcasts on HBO and watch them all in order. (ie Week 1 is episodes 1-5, week 2 is 6-10 etc). So..... another thing that I think is pretty amazing.

By the way, I am getting ready to start listing songs and music that is making an impact on me. Just wondering, does the music player I have annoy you, should I move it to the top so you can silence it, do you like it and want me to keep adding good songs? Let me know.

You ever get intimidated to do something that you really want to do, but you want to make sure it is done well? You could throw something out and do it real quick like, but the more you get into it the more you learn that there is better stuff out there and you want to learn it.

That's how I feel about this stupid blog. Nobody reads it yet, but I want to make it really good before I start 'pimping' it out. Same thing with music, photography, writing etc etc. It's hard to put something crappy out there and have your name attached to it.

That being said... here is a recommendation for stupid movies that will actually make you laugh and aren't actually all that stupid.

GALAXY QUEST. I was skeptical, but the cast is really funny, the story is really good, and it has one of the silliest, epic endings you'll ever see in a movie maybe? Sam Rockwell plays another crazy character, the story is ludicrous, Tim Allen plays a likable Tim Allen character and Sigourney Weaver is a cute heroine who slowly loses bits of clothing throught the whole movie.

Anyway, if you don't like it, then I will formally post an apology to you and put your name on this website (although then everyone will know that you can't appreciate what a funny movie this is so...)

Quick post. Tonight is the last episode of Friday Night Lights. Possibly forever. After this is the trike and maybe cancellation (or hopefully move to another network if NBC doesn't pick it up). Hello!!
Just got back from Sundance and it was a good trip. Got good stuff, saw good movies, met fun people at fun parties etc etc. An update is coming soon with photos, review etc.

In the meantime, just wanted to let you know that there is a band that is poised to be HUGE. Maybe 2 -3 months and you will hear and see them everywhere. They're called THE TING TINGS

I've gotten a lot of criticism lately for not updating my blog on a regular basis. And I deserve it. part of the new year resolution is to update more often. So....

I have been fascinated before by them and am now fascinated again.
Don't know if anyone remembers The KLF from the early 90's.

These guys were absolutely mad. They had a GIGANTIC hit album back in the day and afterwards have done things such as deleting their entire catalog in the UK, so you can no longer buy any of their albums. They also burned 1 millions Pounds (UK equiv of dollars) as an artistic statement. Anyway, check out their music and read about them on Wikipedia if you want. Here is the link. THE KLF

Here are some photos from the opening at Lab101 gallery a few weeks ago.Dev and Cin in front of the long line of small little cute paintings. I didn't buy any paintings, but I did buy a nice Andrew Pommier print that night. I forgot to take a picture of it.

Here is Chaz either pondering something or hiding the tiny mouse that is in his beard. I'll bet it tickles and he's looking real serious to keep from laughing.

Below is a pic of my favorite painting of the night. I really wanted to buy it, but financial issues prohibited me from fulfilling that desire. Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy cool paintings.

This is Lisa and I after eating some amazing cheesecake at Junior's Deli and talking about how huge all Maericans are and how they eat too much food. She is from Sweden. I literally woke up to her one morning and we went to Grand Central etc etc. What a pleasant surprise to wake up to.

This is a picture of some kids I saw on the train back from CT. Sort of a happy accident that it turned out well as I was literally still moving on the train and snapped it as we were still moving.

I have more photos and more stuff to chat about, but I have to go pick up lights to finish up our short.

Went to see "The Feeling" on Tue night at Cinespace. Unfortunately I think Cinespace is a fairly silly, pretentious place usually. The band was amazing and their album is amazing. Very light, fun, well crafted pop music. Go listen to a few songs and see if you don't enjoy them.

Final episode of Friday Night Lights is this Wed. If you haven't been watching it, rent the DVD's when they come out this summer and if you don't love the show, I will pay you back your rental money.

The Riches. Not sure if it's a great show, but I keep watching it every week and it makes an impact. I guess that's something. It's on FX

Little Jimmy Osmond - Long haired Lover from Liverpool. This is a FUNNY song, you'll like it. I remember when Jimmy Osmond was on the TV show Fame. He played a sort of "special" kid who had mental problems but a great voice. He sang some song that was amazing and somebody used the word INTRINSIC in it and explained what it meant to Jimmie (I think it might have been Bruno). It's a good word. I sort of feel strange posting new posts (is there a better way to word that?) without photos, but I dont have anytmie to include photos right now.
I am in AZ and it's still warm. It's kind of funny here, Thanksgiving is actually when it starts to get cool and crisp. October is fun for people to think about Autumn and what the weather probably feels like in other places, but it's not really Autumn. Actually I don't know if AZ has an Autumn. It's more of a "Not Summer" season.

Anyway, I spent all day yesterday sending e-mails and working with Project Runway marathon on in the background. Never looked intersting to me, but it sucked me in yesterday and made me want to get my clothing line going. I still don't know who actually won. Can anyone help me and tell me who it was? My guess Micahel Knight, if for no other reason than I heard he has a really cool car that talks and jumps buldings.

Here are a few photos from the Getty Museum last week. It was week 2 of a 3 week series where they keep the Getty open late and have music. This music was all Eastern Music and it was amazing. Beautiful view of the city at dusk and then the city lights at night, amazing visuals and TONS of really cool people. From top to bottom: Two sister with AMAZING hair. Cuties.

Again, not sure why I am even writing on this thing, but maybe someday my children or grandchildren will come up on the internet and need some kind of research project about their relatives for Genealogy 101 and they can use this to see what a strange man their grandfather was.

Anywya, no photos this time, but have had a busy few days. Had a nice 4th of July. Watched fireworks and hung out with cool people at some party. (of course, who ISN'T cool in LA?) Musicians, photogs, fireworks and semi-dancing to old classics.

Then last night went to the Hollywood Bowl to see Belle and Sebastian. I missed the Shins, but I'm sure they played a nice, earnest indie type set. As stated in the Belle show "they're nice lads" or something like that.
The show itself was great. They were backed by the LA Philharmonic and it was spectacular. I'm not a GIGANTIC B and S fan, but it was really well done, lots of energy, beautiful setting and they are earnest and cool. I told Laura that I think they are happy music for people that are sad. Seems like their fans are mostly fairly intelligent people who are kind of negative and depressed, but wish they were happier and always have some crazy, romantic sense of hope alive inside of them. Belle and Sebastian seem to nurture that sense of hope a little bit. Anyway, great show.

Time to go try out for a few gameshow and get some work accomplished.

Prince in Bryant Park this last Friday. The boy can still get funky.

Sheila E still beats the drum like almost nobody I've ever seen. I remember seeing her once where she just got rid of the drumsticks and started pounding the drums and cymbals. Her hands were bleeding and she was still just going crazy.

But back to Prince. The new album is solid. It's no Purple Rain, but still good stuff. Fury is hot. If you don't like Prince then you probably shouldn't come back and visit this stupid blog ever again (like ANYONE is reading this anyway...)

Anyway, free Prince in Bryant Park. You've gotta Love NY.

David Blaine didn't set the record. Tens of thousands of people went to see him and he ended up only holding his breath for 7 minutes. OK, but not all that amazing. He's good at creating spectacle. decent weekend. some productive stuff, an idea for a screenplay, met Tom Cavanaugh (Ed)(very cool guy)and the weather was nice. Overall no complaints. well, one complaint, but i can't get into it here. angels and airwaves. i know some people will think it's cheesy, but so far i REALLY like what I hear. Just got back from a weekend in Miami. Gorgeous girls, sunny beach, amazing house music and cool people. It was a much needed break. I am getting old, but still can't seem to totally give up having fun. There's a great article in this week's/ month's New York magazine about my generation (late 20's early 30's) that doesn't want to grow up and doesn't care as much about money and sttatus but more about freedome and "passion" for their job. Great article if anyone is interested in reading it.

I also hate the Ask.com commercials with people as monkeys using the internet. it isn't funny, ask.com sucks and those monkey people are disguistingly ugly. I hate it hate it hate it.

Here are some photos from New Year's Eve that I have been meaning to post for awhile. It's from a cruise ship that went up and down the Hudson River. There were fireworks and it was COLD. I think we were right at the Statue of Liberty at midnight and that's where the fireworks were. We were thinking about hitting Time's Square, but everyone said it is like being in a cattle drive and if it's cold it's even worse. One of those things you're supposed to do I guess, but it just doesnt seem fun when you really get down to it.

Since Ola planned the evening we went with her roommates and friends. I am the only person not born in Poland in these pictures. I was born in Arizona instead. That was my parent's choice. I think it was a good choice. i like Arizona. Anyway, I have definitely had worse New Year's eves. I can tell some stories on this blog about other New Year's if anyone requests them. It';s always fun to hear other people's stories. Winter is taking a break after that huge snowstorm, but still needing a sun break.

The most recent episode of The Office is a bit of a departure. Still very funny, it actually brings in some more human emotion and shows that the characters are not always cynical, shallow people. What an interesting show. Definitely for a thinking crowd. Sad to think that it is almost over and that they will ruin it by bringing it to America. Nice to see that Coupling failed here. Never thought it was funny on BBC and think it would do even poorer here in the U.S.

Wildcat Report

This year's Wildccat team is not a Ferrari. It's not flashy with tons and tons of power under the hood. It is also not a city bus with tons and tons of players. Actually, it's not like a car at all, that was kind of a stupid analogy and I ahve no idea where it was going.

This year's team IS quite good and it feels good. Feels like home. There's not a huge amount of excitement and not a lot of expectations, but everyone has a role to play and it is one of those classic UofA teams that quietly goes about its job and make a trip to the Final Four. Here are a few points from what I have seen at the Red Blue and today's scrimmage.

*No fat on this team. None!! Every single team member looks cut and it looks like everybody spent a lot of time this past summer in the weight room. Isaiah Fox is no longer soft. He looks great and plays much better because of it.

*Frye has put on about 10 pounds of muscle and will dominate the Pac-10. His touch is still soft and he looks like he has expanded his shooting range a bit. I think Channing will be the leader of this team and again, if he doesn't make All-American first or second team I wil be shocked. He is that good.

*Andre Iguodala is still quite amazing. He made quite a few treys and his outside shot should help his game quite a bit. He also had some Beautiful dunks. Andre will be another big surprise for people this year and could also be an all-american candidate.

*Hassan Adams had a spurt where he had 3 blocks in a few minutes and a few nice midrange shots. He sem to kind of play in bursts. Spectacular for a few minutes, but then kind of disappears.

*Shakur is YOUNG. He looks young and he plays young. He is defintely quick, but can't shoot very well and is a little timid at the point. Has a lot of potential, but will take about a year for him to really be comfortable I think.

*Chris Rodgers looks a bit better, but is still a spaz. I think Lute may try to play Shakur and teach him to be the starting point guard rather than play Rodgers more. Tough to say. Either way, point is our weakness this year.

*Salim Stoudamire is freakin' good. He had a nice breakaway dunk, about 5 or 6 steals and his shot is that same old Salim sweetness on long range and free throws. He dribbles a bit less and I would like to see him run Point every now and then. He;s still definitely a shooter but seems to play a bit more under control than the other two.

*Walters will see some playing time this year. Not too fast but pretty strong and seems like a smart kid. not amazing, but will be a solid replacement for Fox/Frye whenever they leave.

*The rest of the second team is basically only good for practicing against. Somebody may turn into a Kevin Flannagan or something, but even that is probably asking too
much.

*Some funny quotes by Lute:
(to Shakur) "Don't foul the driver, our big men will take care of it."

(to Rodgers, after he didn't get up on D when he was supposed to be meeting at half court) "Take Chris out, put Salim in. Chris, get down here. (slow saunter pretending he didn't hear Lute) YOU'D BETTER COME FASTER THAN THAT!" It was pretty funny.

*Final score was 115-72, first team winners.

* Took a few photos and will post those sometime soon. Basically, I think we should fel good about this team. Not a top 5 team, but they deserve the top 10 ranking. Should probably lose about 6 or 7 games, but could make a deep run into the tournament. Here's to a good season you freakin' Joes.
